Tolstoys short story "The Death of Ivan Ilych." They are both men who face a crucial end to their lives, a strange and painful and horrific end. While their stories
and their lives differ, they are clearly very much the same in terms of making powerful realizations as they make a steady decline into death. Kafka and Tolstoy
Gregor was a man who felt oppressed by his position in life, through his endless work, and seemingly little in the way of reward as he wakes to find he
is a bug, likely a beetle or cockroach. He thinks, "Travelling day in and day out. Doing business like this takes much more effort than doing your own business
at home" (Kafka). From a psychological perspective one could envision that his becoming a bug was representative of him losing all hope and dreams and finding no meaning in life.
Gregor lives with his parents and his sister and he does what he can to support them but ultimately sees everything as futile as he descends into a madness that
is his physical condition. Ivan was also a man, in the end, who felt he had no particular purpose. He was more
successful than Gregor and supported his family. But as his story develops he begins to envision how his life has been pointless, coming to similar conclusions as Gregror. And as
he declines he becomes more and more bitter. "What tormented Ivan Ilych most was the deception, the lie, which for some reason they all accepted, that he was not dying
but was simply ill, and that he only need keep quiet and undergo a treatment and then something very good would result" (Tolstoy). From this one can perhaps see that
