In fact, there are a number of books published identifying Jordanus as the author but some scholars believe Jordanus de Nemore was Jordanus de Saxonia, a Grand Master of the Dominicans (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). Scholars do agree, however, that Jordanus was an important person "in the development of mathematics and science" (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). OConnor and Robertson (2003) report that "Jordanus was the first to correctly formulate the law of the inclined plane." He was also the first scholar to replace numbers with letter, thus setting the path for algebraic expressions as we know them today (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). He also substituted letters for numbers in his work with astronomy, using letters to "denote the magnitude of stars" (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). In one of his writings, Jordanus explained "the Arabic number system" (OConnor and Robertson, 2003), in another, he explained how to u se integers and in another, he explained fractions (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). He wrote a geometry text in Latin in which Jordanus explores stereographic projection (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). One text, De numeris datis, "is recognised as the first advanced algebra composed in western Europe" (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). In this, Jordanus "gives results solving quadratic equations similar to those given by al-Khwarizmi" (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). Jordanus proofs had to do with "the method of completing the square" (OConnor and Robertson, 2003). Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci (1170-1250) is credited with "reviving ancient mathematical skills" (OConnor and Robertson, 1998) but he also made original contributions to mathematics (OConnor and Robertson, 1998).
