development. Overview of main points In presenting his viewpoint on European development, first of all, Jones looks at the environmental features of Europe and the social conditions of medieval
society and relates population growth both to cultural standards and ecological factors. For example, Jones points out that because Europeans lived in a more stable environment, they had less to
gain from producing large families than did their Asian counterparts, and this enabled them to "control fertility by marriage restrictions" (Jones 20). Jones stresses that this does not mean that
Europeans were inherently wiser than Asians, but rather that climatic conditions elicited different social reactions. He also point out that a "European pleasantry," facing the same risks and conditions
