Then, there are others like the Kennedy brothers who regarded Hoffa as an arrogant and power-hungry thug interested only in serving his own ambitions. Love him or hate him, Jimmy Hoffa was a force to be reckoned with, a tough and no-nonsense negotiator who rose from stock boy to lead one of the most powerful labor unions on the United States. Hoffa continues to represent the American Dream at its best and also its worst. James Riddle Hoffa was born on Valentines Day in Brazil, Indiana, one of four children of blue-collar parentage. His father was a coal prospector who died of black lung when Hoffa was just four. In 1924, the Hoffa family relocated to Detroit, Michigan, where Hoffa would try to support his family in any way he could, such as transporting laundry home in a wagon for his mother to wash, chopping and selling firewood, and hauling shells gathered from the Wabash River to sell to local button makers.1 He quit school in either ninth or tenth grade and found work first as a department store stock boy, then working in the warehouse at Krogers, a Detroit grocery store chain. This was the age of the Great Depression, and Hoffa received a greater education in life than he ever did in school. His firsthand experiences of intolerable working conditions and low pay made a lasting impression on the Detroit teenager, who learned at a young age what his calling would be. Angered by the deplorable work environment, Hoffa organized four of his co-workers into a strike, which was calculated to coincide with the delivery of strawberries for distribution. ...
