This is clearly the case in his play "The Merchant of Venice" where young women desire a certain man and yet are unable, for one reason or another, to simply marry that man. As such they may mask their identity or play a game that diverts an outcome so that they can ultimately live "happily ever after" so to speak. For the most part Shakespeares "The Merchant of Venice" is a story about the relationship between Portia and Bassanio. However, when examining the parallel relationship between Jessica and Lorenzo we gain a deeper understanding of the primary relationship. With that in mind the following paper looks at the relationship of Jessica and Lorenzo and discusses how it functions as something of a mirror to Portia and Bassanios relationship, thereby giving the reader a deeper understanding of the love that exists within the romances. Jessica and Lorenzo In the beginning of Shakespeares play we see that Jessica is very smitten with Lorenzo, as well as seeing that Portia is unhappy with all her suitors, yet keeps thinking of one man, Bassanio, hoping that he comes to rescue her from her loneliness. With Jessica the first hint of desire or romance comes when she asks Launcelot to give Lorenzo a note for her: "soon at supper shalt thou see/ Lorenzo, who is thy new masters guest:/ Give him this letter; do it secretly;/ And so farewell: I would not have my father/ See me in talk with thee" (2.3. 5-9).
