Not unlike his insightful application and unique style, Joyce appeals to the innermost recesses of the readers soul. The author has a long history of reaching out and inviting his audience to experience with him the sometimes intense and often expansive sense of being that is clearly portrayed within his works. "It was the last tram. The lank brown horses knew it and shook their bells to the clear night in admonition. The conductor talked with the driver, both nodding often in the green light of the lamp. On the empty seats of the tram were scattered a few coloured tickets. No sound of footsteps came up or down the road. No sound broke the peace of the night save when the lank brown horses rubbed their noses together and shook their bells" (Joyce Chapter 2). The characters of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man are particularly associated with Joyces insightful attempts at establishing a symmetrical ambiance throughout his work. It can readily be argued that the author created characters that were both believable and fully developed, which is a feat not always easily accomplished. The fact that Joyce is completely able to represent his characters in such a fashion as to give the reader a sense of connectedness speaks volumes regarding the authors inherent talent.
