entire 20th century. He was a man who was, perhaps, not incredibly unusual in his life when compared to other authors. He did not do anything incredibly outrageous, nor did he live a particularly strange life. In fact, it seems that the most outrageous thing he may have done was live with his woman for many years before marrying her, well after the birth of their children. But, he was an exceptional writer in that he was a man who could employ new processes to writing, and in the fact that he could essentially record a great deal of Irelands culture and people through his writing. It seems, in fact, that no person before or after Joyce has quite captured the people and the land that is Ireland. Interestingly enough, he only truly spent his youth in Ireland. But, as we shall see, he retained all of the culture, all of the people he had known, and was very much a man of Ireland at heart despite the fact that he traveled throughout the continent for most of his life, only returning to Ireland a few times. In the following paper we examine Joyces life and his work. The first half of the paper details his life from birth to death, illustrating, as mentioned, how his life was not necessarily strange or completely outrageous. The second half of the paper discusses some of his most important work, discussing themes and primary influences. The paper also presents, in the discussion of the works, various criticisms offered by individuals who have examined one or another of Joyces stories from different perspectives.
