chemical engineering. He immediately went to work at GE Plastics in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. In 1981, Welch became CEO and chairman for General Electrics Corporation. At that time, GE was the
11th largest company in the United States and had recorded earning of $1.65 billion in 1980 (Lewis 2002). GE had a market value of $12 billion When Welch retired in
2001, GE was the largest company in the world and had a market value of $447 billion (Lewis 2002). Welch was born in 1935 in Salem, Massachusetts. His father, a
train conductor, taught Welch the things he thought his son needed to know. These lessons included communicating bluntly, control his destiny, and always face reality as it was (Lewis 2002).
Jack took these lessons to heart and used them in school as well as in his business. He had an inherent entrepreneurial spirit and seemed to be a natural leader
throughout his life in everything he did (Lewis 2002). At GE Plastics, Welch became irritated with the layers of bureaucracy. In fact, it upset him so much that he very
nearly quit after being with GE for only one year (Lewis 2002). A superior recognized Welchs potential and was able to keep Welch at the company. Promotion followed promotion until
