                                                    11th largest company in the United States and had recorded earning of $1.65 billion in 1980 (Lewis 2002). GE had a market value of $12 billion When Welch retired in  
                                                
                                                    2001, GE was the largest company in the world and had a market value of $447 billion (Lewis 2002). 	Welch was born in 1935 in Salem, Massachusetts. His father, a  
                                                
                                                    train conductor, taught Welch the things he thought his son needed to know. These lessons included communicating bluntly, control his destiny, and always face reality as it was (Lewis 2002).
