For some philosophy is a way of life; for others things will happen as they will with no pattern or reason. Have we lost the sense of moral responsibility for ourselves or for our children? The subject of moral philosophy involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior. As far back in civilization as we find writing, we find people struggling with ethical questions. Justice as an ethical question (and ethical question as that which clarifies the source and content of our moral obligations) is the one we will examine in this paper. Cultural relativism For centuries, moral philosophers have reflected on the philosophical problems raised by clashing social values. The principal question raised is whether moral values exist independently of human social creations. Cultural relativism is the view that societies create their own traditions, pass them along from one generation to another, and continually reinforce them through rewards and punishments. On this view morality is a distinctly human invention and it makes no sense to look for a foundation of morality outside of human social approval. Consequently, for example if we are examining the concept of justice for fifth and sixth century Greeks, in light of this argument, we might say that a given society defines its own justice. Correspondingly another society, might have a slightly different version. Anaximinder (ca. 610 - 545 B.C.E.)
