One frequently used tool to assess the internal environment is a SWOT analysis, internal strengths and weaknesses, external opportunities and threats. The two areas that deal specifically inside the organization are: * Strengths: Some questions that may be asked include: how strong is brand awareness? How strong is leadership? Management? How efficient is the organization? Does the organization have effective personnel policies? Are employees highly motivated? How financially sound is the organization? (Nowell, 2005). * Weaknesses: Some questions include: What is the employee turnover rate? If it is high, this is a weakness. What is the organizations reputation in the community? Are leaders hesitant to take risks? (Nowell, 2005). Is the distribution channel weak? Does the organization act in ways that are contrary to its stated mission and objectives? The organization can conduct a SWOT analysis on any subunit within the organization, e.g., human resources, use of technology, etc. Conducting a proper SWOT will provide insights to management they would otherwise not have known. This process requires the organization to take a very close and serious look at what is happening in different areas and how those areas can be improved. Ideas for value added services should emerge from an internal environmental analysis. Value added services may be offered in each of the delivery elements, i.e., pre-service, point-of-service, after-service (Swayne, Duncan, and Ginter, 2007). These must be determined prior to developing action plans because the plan will incorporate these analyses as well as the value adding services the institution is going to provide.
