is still true, because the empirical research is only beginning on womens health care issues and many doctors resist change, revealed information is proving valuable for women and for the womens health movement. "In the spring of 1993, Sherri Wojcik, a Winnipeg mother of three, felt a lump in her right breast and immediately went to a doctor. The physician assured her it was only a cyst," but a year later, the lump was still there. After surgery, she didnt have a breast-and she woke up to find that she had cancer (Nichols, 1998). Wojcik now believes that what happened to her may not happen to as many women. She now sees a younger physician, whom she says "has more up-to-date ideas, and takes the time to listen" (Nichols, 1998). This change in attitude has helped on one front, but the largest transformation is taking place between in the entire area of "male-dominated medicine" (Nichols, 1998). Nichols attributes this to the momentum of the womens health movement begun two decades ago, where physician training began to incorporate different programs for womens, mens and childrens health in North American. "Problems of bias and paternalism towards women are still endemic in the system," says Dr. Penny Ballem, vice-president of womens health programs at the British Columbia Womens Hospital in Vancouver. "But the system is beginning to change. Some doctors are keeping up to date and learning to communicate better with women" (Nichols, 1998). Although awareness is important, the other reality is that changes must also be made in diagnosis and treatment.
