In 2005 Aral Sharon unilaterally withdrew Jewish settlements from the mainly Palestinian Gaza strip. This was welcomed by the Palestinians, but it was also undertaken with no negotiations and many Jewish settlers argued they had the right to stay. that these were illegal settlements that should never have been built. For others, this was seen as the forcible removal of people from their homes, homes that were in an area of land where they had the same rights as Palestinians to occupy. However, when looking at the issues surrounding the settlements on the Gaza strip and the claims of legitimacy we need to look at both sides of the argument. Both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, at best can be described as territory where there are competing claims. However, this does not help resolve the disputes. Israel in deciding to disengage from the Gaza strip saw many upset Jews, which included protests with some Jews wearing orange Stars of David reminiscent of the yellow Stars of David used to identify Jews during the holocaust. This was a clear message by those that they felt they were being persecuted and forced out of their homes when they have a right to be there. Norman G. Finkelstein is a controversial scholar, but he has made some very valid observation regarding the way in which the holocaust is remembered. The Argument IS NOT That it should not be remembered, but in the name of former persecution and the guilt that is felt by much of the west at allowing that persecution to take place and created an environment in which the Jews are now able to persecute the Palestinians with little or no recrimination. Therefore the use of the orange Stars of David may be argued as nothing more than a cheap trick to retain the image of the Jewish people as the persecuted rather than the persecutors.
