Given the 2006 national deficit of, what according to our government was $260 billion and what according to others is closer to $551 billion (Sloan, 2006), it would seem that our government was broke. By the governments estimates we are $58 billion less in debt than we were in 2005 (Sloan, 2006)! Many would contend that we are the richest government in the world. But wait! What about the other calculation of $551 billion? There seems to be a slight discrepancy there! Whichever calculation is closer to correct, the old adage that "figures can lie and liars can figure" certainly comes to mind! In short getting a real handle on our nations financial problems is difficult to say the least. Intuitively, however, we know that something is wrong! If we are so rich and powerful then why is there any national deficit? If we are so rich and powerful then why is it that the typical American is being swept away by a river of debt? The middle guy is just having to work too hard to keep their head above water while the big guy just seems to be getting bigger and bigger and the so-called "entitled" just seem to keep raking in more and more entitlements! Is our government broke or is there just something desperately wrong here? There are obvious financial problems in the country that is perceived by many to be the most powerful nation on earth.
