Many of the problems we face today are the result ethnocentrism, the tendency of one group of people to view those outside their group prejudicially. Ethnocentrism, of course, is present among religious groups and racial groups alike. If the question must be answered, however, as to whether religion or race is the main problem of the 21st century then the answer must be race. Religion, after all, encompasses people of all races. Race, however, is biologically determined. While an individual has the luxury of being able to change their religion, there is no escaping their race. That fact coupled with the documented prejudice that exists in the world regarding race cements the contention that race is, in fact, the main problem of the 21st century. The problems that we are witnessing in todays world are not, of course, the result of any particular race being more prone to certain behaviors than others but rather the characteristic of all races to identify more closely with others of their race and to look with a certain degree of trepidation on members of other races. In the worst manifestation of this characteristic we have discrimination or even hate crimes. This characteristic is found all over the world. A persons color, his or her race or ethnicity, can be one of the most important factors in determining the way that person will be accepted by mainstream society and the privileges which will be granted by that society.
