6 percent of black men have white wives while only 2 percent of black women have a white husband (Sailer). The numbers escalate when co-habitation is included - 14 percent of black men live with a white woman but only 3 percent of black women live with a white man (Sailer). According to the 2000 census, there were 95,831 black women married to white men. There were 239,477 black men married to white women. This data reveals that more than twice as many black-white marriages have a black husband and white wife (Sailer). This may be why there are so many comments in popular media that relate to black women being unable to find a good black man to marry. Movies and television shows tend to depict the perceived resentment of black women when they see a black woman with a white man (Sailer). And, Bebe Moor Campbell, a columnist, wrote about the reaction she and her friends had at seeing a white man with a black woman: they "cursed trespassing white women who dared to take our men" (Sailer 2003). It also might be that black women experience more pressure to marry within their race. Surveys over the past several years have consistently reported a far greater acceptance level of mixed race dating and marriage. A recent study from Pew Research Center (2006), for example, revealed that 22 percent of Americans report having a relative who is in a mixed race marriage. However, this data is skewed because 37 percent of blacks reported a close relative in an interracial marriage but only 17 percent of whites reported this event (Pew Research Center).
