be raised about the validity and reliability of the body of research conducted. As a result, it is beneficial to assess the issues of validity and reliability as they relate to existing qualitative and quantitative studies. The concepts of validity and reliability correspond directly with the methods utilized in producing the data both qualitative and quantitative studies. According to Greenhalgh (1997), reliability and validity begin with an explicit statement of the study objectives and an outlining of the materials to be used. Additionally, methods must be conducted according to explicit and reproducible methodology (Greenhalgh, 1997). Greenhalgh (1997) also argued that the author should state research limitations and the criteria used to evaluate sources for inclusion or exclusion in a review of literature. Validity refers to the studys relevance, correctness, and significance in its basic hypothesis, method, and interpretation. Simply put, a study is valid if it measures what it claims to measure. Reliability refers to the accuracy and repeatability of the research findings (Smith, 1981). If two comparable studies lead to widely different conclusions, either their methodologies and findings are unreliable in some important aspect, or the research hypothesis and method are invalid. A valid research method may not always produce any significant results, or it may confirm a null hypothesis, but if conducted properly, a study using such a method should produce valid, reliable results. Possible treats to internal validity for research on international higher education include problems in correlating methodologies for specific studies, as well as issues that stem from inadequate assessments of population or demographic differentiations of populations in order to determine study biases. Threats to internal validity commonly occur when researchers fail to demonstrate the relevance of a methodology for specific hypotheses or when the interpretation of results does not correspond ...
