Harvard University Medical School has demonstrated a long-standing interest in the areas of medicine and medical research that are invaluable to a combined study program. Harvard School of Medicine is broken down into a variety of different areas of study, from medical dentistry to the M.D.-Ph.D. program, which is linked to the National Institute of Healths (NIHs) Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) (Harvard, 2004). This fellowship area of study is an area of great interest because of the link between the course of study and the pursuit of a research career. The goal of this program, then, is to focus on the education of physician-scientists, individuals who will one day become very innovative clinicians who can integrate a view of research into their practice (Harvard, 2004). In the statement regarding the program, Harvard argues that some of the students who leave this program will become leaders in biomedical research and engineering, and will take a clinical perspective to research that is necessary in many of the emerging areas of biomedical research.
