The student begins with the observation that although there are many ways of looking at a city (in this case Los Angeles), the instructor, Dr. Mata, presented a fresh approach: viewing the city from the cultural, ethnic and social perspectives. S/he observes that it is the people who live there that shape the city, not the engineers who built it. S/he also observes that Los Angeles is perfect for practicing "interreligious dialogue" because of its many diverse communities. The student observes that although the diversity of the city provides settings in which these dialogues can take place, those setting can also be time bombs that explode into religious and cultural conflict. Throughout history, various tribes and ethnic groups have gone to war against each other because they do not share the same belief systems or the same views of God. While they may have been similar in some ways, the similarities were not enough to make their relationships sociable; instead, they remained antagonistic. The student will try to find solutions to these potential problems. September 9: The student relates that although it is necessary for the major religions of the world to enter into a dialogue, that will probably never be possible. S/he reveals that the professor opted not to talk about Judaism because there were Jews in the class, and in the students opinion, that means that an open and honest dialogue is impossible, as is what s/he calls total religious globalization.
