For kindergarten learners, early introduction to technology as a component of literacy learning can be valuable in enhancing learning outcomes. Description of Technology The use of technology can include everything from the use of computer-based reading and writing programs to the use of whiteboards and other technologies designed to enhance interactions with educators. One of the most common uses of technology in the classroom is to engage learners in response-based programming that fosters early reading readiness. Educators must recognize, though, that this type of technology should be used as a method to enhance other classroom activities and allow students to transfer what is learned via the use of technology into other aspects of the educational experience. Educators must be advocates both for their students and for the specific instructional methods they use, but reflect an understanding of how technology can and should inform instructional process (McKenna and Robinson, 2002; See also Hansford and Hattie, 1982). Technology and Literacy Programming In the kindergarten classroom, a variety of activities occur during the course of a day, ranging from those that focus on life skills orientation to those that reflect the need for early literacy learning. In many cases, activities are reflected upon in a manner that supports the development of conceptual ideas that also support early reading skills. For example, when children reflect upon their activities from the day before, they have the opportunity to construct stories, develop time lines and understand vocabulary related to these stories.
