(Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994). By the turn of that century to 1000 AD, Arab traders were bringing coffee plants back to their home to cultivate it (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994). They boiled the beans and called their new drink qahwa, which meant "that which prevents sleep" (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994). It was not until 1901 that instant coffee was invented (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994). Different sources credit different people; one story is that Satori Kato, a Japanese American chemist who lived in Chicago created instant coffee, just add the hot water (Bellis, 2004). In 1906, George Constant Washington, an English chemist, introduced the first mass-produced instant coffee (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994; Bellis, 2004). Washington was living in Guatemala at the time, he observed there was dried coffee on his coffee carafe and began experimenting with it, eventually creating an instant coffee he called "Red E Coffee" (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994; Bellis, 2004). The coffee was marketed under that brand name (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994). In 1938, Nescafe or freeze-dried coffee appeared on the market (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994). It was between those years, in 1903, that Ludwig Roselius experimented with a batch of ruined coffee beans and created a process for removing the caffeine from the beans (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994). That would be marketed as Sanka, which is a contraction of the French term sans caffeine, without caffeine (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 1994). It was not long before numerous companies were producing instant coffee, both caffeinated and decaffeinated. Today, Nestl? is the worlds largest producer of instant coffee (Murray, 2004). Nescafe is their brand (Murray, 2004).
