With initiation there is also often the loss of some sort of innocence or another. The following paper examines, individually, Thomas Kings "The Borders" and Margaret Laurences "The Loons" as they involve examples of initiation. The paper finishes with a comparison of the two. The paper illustrates how the primary characters in each of these stories clearly reaches a level of initiation in relationship to their particular world, and the world of Natives from within and without the culture. The Borders This particular story is one that is intriguing in terms of initiation in light of the fact that the boy in the story never really admits to realizing something of significance. He appears to be a simple boy, but the story being told is his, and we assume he is telling the story as an adult. This indicates that a lesson was truly learned for it was a moment in his life that is very vivid as an adult. He remembers his innocence, as well as his simple ignorance, and in that simple narrative position we know the story is important, even if the boy does not know it yet. The story involves the boy and his mother as they attempt to cross the border from Canada into the United States in order to visit the boys sister in Salt Lake City.
