There were some companies that made good contacts and two had sold their products locally since that time (2001). For example, a company called SPA distributes its products in Puerto Rico through San Juan Trading (2001). The 2002 mission had been planned to highlight the food industry (2001). Some foods that would be featured are foie gras, pate, confectionery products and fruit products (2001). By most accounts it seems that business in Belgium is good, or at least growing. Yet, if one were to embark on a trade relationship with Belgium businesses it helps to know something about not only the economy, but the government and cultural aspects as well. After all, when doing business with members of a particular country, understanding conventions and political risks are essential. First, some information on its structure go to government type. Belgium is a monarchy in northwestern Europe and incorporates a federation that is split into French-and Flemish-speaking citizens (Martinez, 2001). More technically, it is a federal parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarch ("Belgium," 2002). Further, it has a civil law system that had been influenced by English constitutional theory (2002). While that is the case, there are no elections held as the monarchy that is based on heredity chooses its leaders (2002). While it is not the same kind of democracy that exists in the United States for example, it still upholds some democratic principles.
