However, we can also see how in a large bureaucratic system such as the EU, where a single parliament rules over fifteen different countries, the idea of democracy may be one that is diluted in terms of representation. The European Union makes good economical and political sense, but many people feared in joining a big club, believing that the individual countries, especially the smaller, or less powerful ones would loose their cultural identity and become European citizens, rather than the nationality that is shown on their passport. Others saw it as a take over attempt by Germany, proposing that they lost the war, but an economical take-over would be just as devastating and furthermore stating the Bundesbank had high ideas regarding its role in a unified Europe. There was still a lot of animosity from the toll taken on Europe under Hitlers rule. The directives that are handed down from the parliament are compulsory on all member countries, therefore, it is important that the countries which are within the EU have their opinions considered before, rather than after, the directives are handed down. The principle that allows for the democratic inputs are those of subsidiarity and proportionality these have been a limiting effect on the would be power mongers of the EU, and ensured that the power, and European or National levels is not exceeded.
