The issue of capital punishment is, perhaps, one of the most hotly contested of all contemporary controversial issues; while some believe that one who kills should pay his debt to society with his own life, others contend that two wrongs -- in the case of executing a murderer -- do not make a right. However, if someone chooses to take the life of another, he should be prepared to give up his own. The fact that a person believes he can take the life of another without reciprocal discipline is a concept many find difficult to grasp, a point well taken in Ernest van den Haags In Defense of the Death Penalty: A Practical and Moral Analysis. Viewers who witness the reality each and every night on their television newscasts are mentally and emotionally pummeled with stories of innocent people being murdered or raped. Sometimes there is a motive, other times the killing is for no other reason than because someone thought he had the right. Yet while van den Haag contends that the death penalty is a just and appropriate punishment, he makes a sincere effort to duly explain why it is far from being a perfect answer.
