The company’s director of operations has requested that all managers improve their groups’ efficiencies in the next quarter if possible, but each must show improvement within six months. The manager all but ceases production for two weeks, using existing parts inventory and continuing to ship finished goods while enlisting nearly all employees and supervisors in designing improvements in the process. The manager uses employees because they are most familiar with any problems that may exist, and s/he seeks to implement a just-in-time approach to manufacturing. requested that all managers improve their groups efficiencies in the next quarter if possible. He understands that improvements may not be fully visible within a single quarter, but six
months brings the day of reckoning. Acme Widgets has its troubles as do all organizations, but it has grown so quickly in the
past few years that there has been little time for strategic management; all available time has been used in simply keeping up. Equipment is adequate as is the production
workforce, but it is clear that production must be more efficient than it has been in the past. In surveying the production process,
it appears that systems work well. Plants are arranged logically and with an eye toward aiding the production process rather than working against it, and there is always an
ample supply of parts and raw materials used in widget manufacturing. Acme always has a widely varied inventory of finished product ready for shipping.
That very analysis reveals several changes that can be made. Not only is Acme tying up far too much capital in raw materials, it is repeating the
error in maintaining a wide variety of finished goods. The first step in ushering in change is that of assessing product inventory. Production needs to be stepped up
on those products that fail to meet a quantity threshold of two weeks, while ceasing production on those that can be expected to last longer than two weeks. After
