of Isabella in Shakespeares Measure for Measure. Isabella, it can be stated, acts as the catalyst which drives the play to its satisfying conclusion, offering a composite opposite to Angelos
villainy. Lord Angelo is easily the villain in the story as he is shown to be ruthless in his application of justice and leadership. He
comes to power because the Duke has supposedly had to leave town. However, the Duke has not really gone out of town, but rather has disguised himself so that he
can observe firsthand the way things really are. Claudio, Isabellas brother, is sentenced to death by Angelo who determines that he will use Claudio as an example to the rest
of the sinners. Thus the stage is set and the events are put in motion which will force Isabella to leave her refuge in a convent and reenter a world
that she has left behind. However, as the audience soon learns, it is her reemergence into the outside world which offers a true glimpse into moral goodness.
Isabella is beyond reproach by Angelos standards. In fact, as the story unfolds she is about to take her vows to become a nun. When she hears of
her brothers wrongful imprisonment she requests an audience with Angelo. When she asks for her brothers release Angelo is so taken with his own power and Isabellas beauty and virtue
that he hypocritically states that if she will have sex with him he will let her brother go. She is shocked and when she tells
her brother about it, he agrees that she should not go through with it. But, after some time, they both realize that there is no other choice if he is
