In a global economy especially, e-mail does a great job of keeping businesses and markets united, no matter where those businesses and their markets might be located. But in terms of the office and communication between managers and employee, is e-mail taking the place of face-to-face contact? On the surface, this seems as though this might be the case. For many managers, e-mail seems to be a godsend; it allows them to keep in touch with a huge base of employees with just a few clicks of a computer keyboard and mouse. This saves time, its thought, and even money. But not everyone has noted that e-mail all the time is necessarily a good thing for the workforce. Even back as far as 2000, the NFIB bemoaned the fact that people have gotten in the habit of e-mailing co-workers, even when those co-workers offices are right next door (National Federation of Independent Businesses 2000). By the end of 2001, it was estimated that about two-thirds of the 130 million adult workers in the United States sent three billion e-messages each day (Goldhaber, 2001). For many managers, in fact, such "virtual" management, in which the manager can communicate without having to deal with the discomfort or "time wasting" of face-to-face visits, have their advantages (Spragins, 2003). In fact, 92 percent of executives surveyed by Accountemps during 2002 said managers often sent an e-mail message instead of meeting the recipient one-on-one (Spragins, 2003).
