For someone who has been a Christian all of his life, for example, it may be difficult to fathom that things outside of what a preacher says and this is worthy of examination. In the world today, many people do simply go to church and receive some spiritual glimpses, but really do not grow personally. They are the recipient of the minister or priests revelations perhaps, or perhaps they are fed the traditional religious fare. For those who have not ventured beyond the mundane religious teachings, reading materials in philosophy or theology may change ones perception of the world and prompt them to gain new personal insights. When reading about new ideas, and different things from a variety of sources, it is difficult to not question the authority under which one is raised. Often, mainstream religions embrace particular teachings, but they are not open to new things. They rely on the Bible alone for example to understand God. Yet, there are different ways one may go about searching and finding God. Of course, if one was raised in a secular home, the baggage of mainline religion will not hinder development. Yet, if this is the case, one may still feel lost. Perhaps Mertons (1998) work may have impacted a students understanding of religion and God most. In this particular piece of writing, an individual looks at himself, his ego, and his relationship with God. Surely, this will have an effect on someone who is searching for truth.
