It was not until the 1960s that Trudeau commissioned a task force on sport (Andrews & Jackson, 2001). In fact, it was also during the 1960s that television viewing of hockey peaked (Rutherford, 1990). Andrews & Jackson (2001) remark: "Sport has played a major role in the social construction of national identity in Canada" (p.171). Many Canadians in fact agree that ice hockey is a part of their identity (Tavidze, 2002). While it may be true that sport has been equated with Canadian national identity, this area has not be a focus of scholars (Andrews & Jackson, 2001). Still, popular culture theory can help to explore and explain the relevance of hockey, a game that has effectively defined Canadians (Earle, 1995). Why is hockey so popular in Canada? It is a pastime for which no actual thesis exists (Earle, 1995). That is, the fact that it exits is not an issue , but why it exists continues to be a mystery. Earle (1995) writes: "If hockey broadcasts and telecasts have long been a recognizable staple of Canadian popular culture, the question about what it signifies is less clear." The fact that ice hockey has been equated with popular culture in Canada is certain, but the history of ice hockey is much longer than it has been considered a part of the nations identity. It has already been noted that during the 1960s, there had been a dramatic increase in the popularity of the sport and the prime minister even gave it attention. Broadcasting was at an all time high.
