an immediate impact on the whole art world, early photographs were in monochrome. As an additional service, daguerreotypes could be hand- painted, which kept a number of painters of
miniatures in business. Using a multitude of early experimental techniques, black and white photographic images continued to be carefully painted by hand. Although this technique was
criticized by the fine art world, the public at large liked the hand tinted work, particularly of their children. However, it was to be some time before color photography
was to become a reality (Henisch 7). Early Experimentation It was generally believed that color was a function of the surface of the photographic materials and that the different hues
were due to differences in the molecular structure. Subsequently, a lot of research was done to find various silver salts sensitive to different colors. Occasionally, some apparent successes were reported
by daguerreotypes having recorded traces of color. One of the more reliable chemists of the time was Robert Hunt, who apparently achieved the production of a color photograph in 1843.
