factually-based resources in order to compile his conviction about the Persian Wars. Herodotus fervently believed factual details were the only components worthy of categorizing with regard to the wars
comprehensive nature, noting quite unequivocally in his skeptical approach how there was no room for theoretical fluff when addressing history. His great discovery was that one could uncover moral
problems and moral truths in history (events), in the concrete data of experience, in a discourse which was neither freely imaginative like that of the poets nor abstract like that
of the philosophers. That is what history (historical understanding) meant to Herodotus.1 Skepticism is the antithesis of philosophy; when great thinkers
espouse a certain belief, skeptics challenge that idea to be true and/or provable. The problem Herodotus had with philosophy is that it is not a verifiable discipline in the
same manner as his research formula of dates and facts but rather is the process of thought and inference through perception. He then took this reality and spinned it
to contest the uncontestable and knew there could be no definitive answer, which he believed lent more credibility to his version of the Persian Wars as being a more reality-based
approach. Philosophical contemplation, he argued, is grounded in a combination of truth and wisdom, and as such is not tangible commodities whereby an accusatory finger can be pointed at
