In other words, he insulted our novel king yet again. After Harfleur, you can be certain that the French king will rue the day that he dared to send those tennis balls to our noble monarch. Oh Father! You should have heard the speech that the king gave to rouse the spirits of the men before doing battle at Harfleur. He urged us "Once more unto the breach," and called us his "dear friends." He pushed us on by reminding us of the stock from whence we came. He urged us to let it be known if we were "worth our breeding" and I think I can say, Father, that you would have been proud to acknowledge me upon the field that day. The kings words ignited the soul of every man that heard him, crying "God, for Harry, England and Saint George," we ran for battle like mad dogs let lose upon an unsuspecting enemy. After such a start, it is small wonder that we won. The king, father, is an interesting and noble ruler. The whole country is aware of how, as prince, King Harry caroused. However, it is clear that he has foresworn his former ways. Prior to the battle, I overheard a boy commenting about a former companion of the kings from his wild youth, a man called Bardolph, who the boy asserted as a "sworn brother in filching" with another man (Act 3, scene 2, lines 42-45; Kahan, 2001).
