bond in the fact of their loss. But its the way Hendel brings the situation to life that makes the story memorable. This paper discusses bereavement in women; analyzes the dialogue between the two women; discusses what the reader learns from them; describes the setting and time period; and the womens thoughts and feelings. Discussion Theres a lot to cover in a very short paper, particularly as the story is so dense and multi-layered. Lets start with the physical setting and time period, because Hendel has written such a strong description of the cemetery that its possible for the reader to see it: "The paths had just been swept, sharpening the clean orderly lines of perspective, and in the heavy hamsin light it looked more colorful and shining than ever, wrapped in a thin pink coat of fresh watering and new blooming, almost a shining sheath of shining lacquer" (Hendel, 2003, p. 116). The period is probably around 1982, because the narrator refers to the fact that there is a "newly flourishing" section (Hendel, 2003, p. 116) for the Lebanon War dead; that conflict erupted in 1982 (The Lebanon war, 1999). There are sections marked off for every one of Israels conflicts, a sad commentary on the fact that the country seems to be in a perpetual state of war with its neighbors, and on the fact that this eternal war has become the norm. There is very little dialogue in the story; that is, instead of writing, "Do you have somebody here?" she writes Do you have somebody here, she asked (Hendel, 2003, p. 116). By writing without the quotation marks, Hendel keeps us in the narrators head throughout the story rather than switching between the two women, which has the effect of moving us quickly through the work. ...
