Health is viewed as a positive outcome of the various actions and activities we do to achieve it, such as a good diet and exercise. Wellness is another thing altogether. It is more complex with a number of interrelated aspects. Wellness includes emotional wellness, intellectual wellness, occupational wellness, physical wellness, social wellness and spiritual wellness. Wellness considers more aspects of human life than even the WTO definition of health. Wellness is more subjective than health, at least when we consider physical health. A doctor can examine a patient and order tests to determine if the patient has any disease or condition. Wellness is far more difficult to assess because it is subjective. It is usually determined through self-assessments (Library Index, 2010). Based on just one factor, it is clear that we are not a nation of healthy people. The proportion of obese and morbidly obese people is broadcast frequently in mass media outlets. It is a world-wide problem and suggests that people either do not know how to live a healthy life or they ignore the information. This is one of the reasons it is so important to instill that knowledge and those practices in children. Elementary schools have a responsibility to provide health education that discusses practices one needs to adopt for a healthy life.
