as a backward or particularly socioecoomically distressed region, Alberta is typified by a number of health problems that could be minimized greatly with education. Obesity is a particularly useful
example of this contention (Alberta Health and Wellness, 2000). It is the second leading preventable cause of death in the world yet Alberta has failed in effecting that
prevention (Colman, 2000). By allotting more money to education we can design tactics to effectively address the problems associated with this basic health criteria.
The prevalence of obesity related health problems in Alberta and a general lack of apparent awareness of how it can be prevented is concerning to say the least
(Alberta Health and Wellness, 2000). Indeed, when we compare Alberta with third world regions such as Singapore, there are many similarities in regard to the relationship that exists between
poor health and education. There are also many lessons, however. In some instances Singapore has proven the value health education can have in promoting her citizens wellness while Alberta
still lags behind in her recognition of the importance of education in promoting good health (Quek, 2006). When we consider the problems associated
with obesity we find a high prevalence in both Alberta and Singapore. Obesity takes a tremendous toll on society both socially and economically in both Alberta and Singapore.
Obesity in Alberta, for example, affects 29.4% of the adult population and is estimated to cost $700 million a year (Colman, 2000). In Singapore in 1992 an estimated 14%
