These are Business Logistics/Supply Chain management; Financial m management; Process and quality improvement; and Technology and optimization (Langabeer, 2008). The functions of operation management in health care are vast and diverse. Again, these functions are broad categories that include many different tasks. The major functions are: workflow process; physical layout; capacity design and planning; staffing levels and productivity management; supply chain and logistics management; quality, and planning and process improvement (Langabeer, 2008). In other words, operations management is about everything it takes to run the organization. The operations managers goal then is to assure everything runs smoothly with high quality products and services. The specific roles of the operations manager include reducing costs, improving logistical flow and increasing stability, improving productivity, providing higher quality services, and improving business processes (Langabeer, 2008). These roles may be compared with the four general roles for all managers which are planning, organizing, leading and controlling (Langabeer, 2008). There are also informational roles, decisional roles and interpersonal roles that all managers perform. Langabeer (2008) said that improving productivity is "one of the most vital roles of an operations manager" (p. 11). This inherently includes providing the highest quality services as possible in order to gain excellent customer satisfaction. If customers are not satisfied, they will go someplace else.
