have a lot of my toys, clothing and papers surrounding my bed. It was comforting in an odd way. During those years, my mother had cleaned my room herself, dusting
and vacuuming around the mess, shoving it to a corner, and shaking her head all the while. She not only begged me to clean at times, but she even offered
me money to do so. Bribes were commonplace, but threats were even more likely. I would hear ultimatums like I could not go to the amusement park if I did
not clean my room. Guess what? In the end, she would come up with some lame excuse as to why I could go even though my room was not clean
yet. Often, I would promise to clean it later and give her a hug. She lived on those promises, but in her heart she probably knew they would not be
fulfilled. When I was sixteen years old, my mother got very sick and died. During the time she was ill, she rarely thought of the room. At least,
it seemed as if the room was the last thing on her mind. Suddenly, nothing else was important except her palliative care. We would quickly get beyond hope because her
prognosis was so extreme. No doctor gave her more than a few months to live. Yet, we spent her last days enjoying the time we could, while discussing plans for
after her death. Who would I live with? What would happen to the family? It was just the three of us: my mother, my sister Sarah and I. Sarah and
