unparalleled leader of men, but was also a strategist par excellence. But who was Hannibal? Unfortunately, for many historians, the answer to this question remains elusive. There is little known about his early years, except that he is believed to have been born in 247 B.C., and was the eldest son of famed Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, the hero of the First Punic War who was known as "Hanno the Great."1 Although born in Carthage (what is now northern Africa), Hannibal actually spent very little of his youth there, forced to spend most of his youth in Spanish military camps after his fathers military defeat forced the family into exile.2 Hannibals career as a general seems almost preordained, for his father had instilled in him a sense of unwavering nationalism and a deep hatred of Carthages bitter enemy, Rome, symbolized by a pledge of eternal vengeance against the city before the Phoenician gods when Hannibal was only ten years old.3 While a dedicated patriot, Hamilcar Barca was not considered to be a great soldier, but his son showed an impressive military aptitude quite young. He was already a military commander by his teens, and it seemed only fitting that his efforts to take over Sarguntum from the Romans, once a Carthaginian stronghold, began the Second Punic War in 218 B.C. While still in his twenties, Hannibal was named general of Carthages land and ground forces, following the assassination of his brother-in-law, Hasdrubal. Why was Hannibal considered a great general?
