the Gulf of Mexico in September of 2005, residents of Galveston cast an uneasy eye at the dangerous storm (Casillas, 2005; see also Hanna and Douglas, 2006). Only a handful
of weeks before, Ritas sister storm, Katrina, had inflicted millions of dollars of damage in Mississippi and Louisiana. But it wasnt Katrina that had residents worried, it was a storm
that had hit the city more than a century before -- the 1900 Galveston Hurricane. As Rita, with its 165 mph winds threatened the coastal city, Galveston residents were preparing
to relive 1900 all over again (Casillas, 2005). Needles to say, in hindsight, Hurricane Rita veered eastward and lost its punch as
it moved between the Texas and Louisiana border. But with Katrina still so fresh in peoples minds, and with Galveston the site of one of the deadliest storms in history,
comparisons between the two were inevitable. In this paper, well examine Hurricane Katrina, and Galvestons "Great Storm," from the beginning of the
predictions to the rebuilding effort. Well also try to put the two storms into context, and determine how and if it shifted economies. The 1900 Hurricane
