The novel has gone under a lot of different titles including a "fragmentary novel," a "short story miscellany," a "short story cycle" and even a "literary hybrid," and for good reason (Kummings 12). These are very much fragmentary stories, but as with much of Hemmingways work, they tend to make up a very symbolic whole. The main framework of "In Our Time" is focused around Hemmingways experience as a journalist during the first World War (Shafer). He tells these stories through the character of "Nick Adams," a man who "grows up" throughout the process of this book. Nick, himself, doesnt have much of a character but rather, is the conduit, the narrator, of what goes on around him. But while Hemingway, himself, considered that the pieces he wrote had a strong unity, some of Hemmingways critics have claimed that there is a definite lack of cohesiveness when it comes to this book (Kummings 12). Others have criticized Hemmingways works in general (and this one in particular) as focusing "on violence and machismo" (Shafer). Is this true? Well find out here. The stories well focus on specifically are "Indian Camp," "The End of Something," "Cat in the Rain," and "The Big Two-Hearted River (Parts I and II)."
