He was not an arrogant men a but very humble man who recognized his weaknesses, and sought out those weaknesses, in order to make himself a better person and a better servant of God. With that in mind the following paper examines a theme in Chapter X of his famous text Confessions. The paper examines this theme, a theme of adoration and supplication, and then examines a similar theme in A Eulogy for Basil the Great by Gregory of Nyssa. The paper then finishes with a discussion of the two. St. Augustine In this particular chapter of St. Augustines he takes note about his rebellious youth and his inability to see beyond his own desires at one point in his life. He mentions that he enjoyed sports far more than he perhaps should have, and for wrong reasons. He notes that he disobeyed his teachers and his parents in this pursuit, stating, "I disobeyed them not because I had chosen a better way, but from a fondness for play, loving the honour of victory in the matches, and to have my ears tickled with lying fables" (St. Augustine Chapter X). He then notes that he learned many things through such examination concerning his behavior, behavior that was less than noble or selfless.
