Of all the ecosystems in the world, it can readily be argued that the grassland - or prairie - ecosystem is one of the most diverse on the planet. Comprised of myriad plant and animal life, grasslands represent a cornucopia of activity in what would seem a most inhospitable place. Indeed, there has been a significant amount of evolution as a means by which this varied flora and fauna have been able to adapt to such a harsh environment, clearly demonstrating the fact that life can exist virtually anywhere. Clearly, grasslands are not conducive for just any life form, but rather only those who have effectively undergone the necessary physiological adaptations that allow them to withstand extreme temperatures and arid conditions. Pheasants and bobolinks establish their nesting grounds in grasslands, two of countless species that utilize these prairies for a combination of food source and coverage. Seeds, moist plant parts and various prey animals comprise the vast majority of consumables found in grasslands. The decline of certain plant and animal populations that dwell in the grasslands is due to several reasons, not the least of which is the significant decrease in food sources; add to that the impact man has had upon their collective habitat and it becomes easy to see why populations like the barn owl - who eat meadow voles that live in grasslands - are having a hard time surviving as a species.
