If we walk down the road and go into a shop many of the brand names will not only be recognised by their names, but also because of the design of the text and any logo. The strident may wish to demonstrate this with examples such as the supermarket where it is the text or other brands were it is a logo that indicates the brand, we know this with examples such as the windows logo, as well as other logs that are more specialised, such as the penguin on penguin books, or the way in which television channels have developed their logos, such as the UK Channel 4 and E4, even the BBC has changed the way in which it is portrayed away from what we may seen as graphic art to a more movement orientated art form, but against, we may argue that in this there are influences of subculture. The development of the use of graphic art in the design of corporate logos can be seen as looking to subcultures as a form of inspiration; a place to get ideas, and with a higher awareness of the existence of subcultures, they have become more fashionable, making this even more influential. Here we first need to what we mean by graphic art, and then at the way that modern corporate logos have developed making use of sub culture form the very beginning of their modern history. The term graphic designer was first used at the beginning of the twentieth century, and it is this era that can be seen to mark the beginning of the modern era of graphic design.
