When looking at the culture and values of Google there is a strong social emphasis, with the firm looking after the employees and providing for their needs, with free food, the provision of leisure facilities in the workplace such as a pool table, a lap pool, a volley ball court and a climbing wall are all provided for the employees to use, sending out messages that support social interaction, health and well being. As the firm seeks to employ many highly technical workers that may be seen by outsiders as geeks, even the head office is referred to as a campus which helps to encourage the learning and developmental aspects of the organization, in many ways the firm is emulating the learning environment of a university with the different facilities. This is also seen with the way that offices are shared, and while this may have started out as a feature of limited resources, it has become a feature of the culture that encourages and facilitates team work with the ability to the teams to become very task focused. For example, the team that developed Gmail ended up working together in a single conference room as it allowed them to get the job done in a more efficient manner (Lashinsky, 2007). This also aid with social commitment and it is not unusual to see engineers still at the office at 3 am, well after their work hours have finished, debating the best way to achieve a specific goal. ...
