Creator has to exist. Many of these arguments fall under the general categories of cosmological or ontological arguments. Cosmological arguments for the existence of God address the universe as a causal result. If everything in reality is viewed as the result of a long chain of cause and effect, then it is logical to assume that there must have been a primal "cause," which set this chain in motion and God is pictured as this primal motivator. In part IV of David Humes Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, various individuals are pictured as having an argument that presents a cosmological explanation for the existence of God. Part IV opens with Cleanthes disagreeing with Demea over a mystical view of God, but Philo interrupts and offers a completely different argument. He observes that if the universe has an intelligent designers (that is, if the cosmological argument is true), than the order of the universe is no more comprehensible than if there were no God. Basically, Philo offers an objection to the cosmological argument that essentially states that this regarding God as the ultimate cause does not answer anything, but rather simply displaces human ignorance into another area. What Philo does not seem to understand is that Cleanthes is not particularly concerned with explaining the universe, but rather offers the argument to how that God exists. "You ask me, what is the cause of this cause? I know not; I care not; that concerns not me. I have found a Deity, and here I stop my inquiry" (Hume). Ontological arguments are based on the idea that we know that God exists in the same manner that we know that 2 + 2 = 4, though reason alone (Augustine). In other words, Gods existence can be shown ...
