There are feminine rituals which have been passed down through generations. America has witnessed the return of midwives, as well as a sense that women should bond when they have the opportunities. In fact, it has seemingly always been this way, despite the fact that some women have given up this sense of sharing. Still, a girls night out is not uncommon. The biblical backdrop for The Red Tent seems to draw on the stereotype of the woman. Deus, in the old poem The Creation and Fall of Man, writes about the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve in fact represents the original model of gender and in the bible, Eve is depicted as beguiling, aligning herself with the serpent and causing Adam to sin. Again, it is the womans fault when something goes wrong. In contemporary society, there is a greater fear about violence against women however than women being violent. Yet, men who beat their wives often reason to themselves that she is deserving of foul treatment. Gender violence is a concern. The idea that men batter women and vice versa is disturbing. Yet, Kaufman (1985) argues that when a man beats a woman, it is not necessarily the only thing he does. This man may be violent with other men and with himself (Kaufman, 1985).
