There are many professions in the health care field, and the one to be considered here, is the role of nurse. The role of doctor has typically been associated with males and the role of nurse has typically been associated with females. There have been many advances in the opportunities and acceptance of both males and females in education and acceptance by society in different professional roles. However, it seems that the acceptance of women as doctors is more prevalent than the acceptance of men as nurses. In a recent comedy movie, Ben Stillers character was actually a male nurse. In the movie this characters occupation was an issue with the father of his finance. It was the source of many of the jokes in the movie. This is the norm rather than the exception in todays media. Todays media continues to perpetuate the ideal of women as nurses, which can be a deterrent to increasing the number of males in this occupation. NURSING OCCUPATION For whatever reason, the occupation of nursing is depicted as a maternal field with the characteristics of caring and nurturing and is associated with women. Since Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) first started to administer to the injured and the sick, the notion that nurses should be women has prevailed (Odendaul, 2004). This may have been a step forward for women at the time as it allowed them to enter the professional world. This gave women the option of being nurses, not just marrying, having children and taking care of their husbands and families. Even now, the publics perception of a nurse is female with a while cap and functioning under the direct orders of a doctor (Trossman, 2003). ...
