is known as a gender identity. Sometimes a male can feel more female, wanting to be a woman. Other times individuals can be seen as having difficulty with gender identity
because they are homosexual. There are many arguments about what forms gender identity, some arguing it is biological and others arguing it is more a social influence. The following paper
examines if gender identity is the result of social rather than biological influences. Gender Identity As mentioned, it is generally determined, at birth, if a child is of
the male sex or the female sex. There are conditions that have infants born with both male and female sexual organs, or parts of both sexual organs. These individuals, for
the most part, are put through surgical procedures to make them male of female. However, the point is that gender identity is not what sex a person is, but what
sexual identity they take on. A gender identity can be homosexual, bisexual, can involve transvestite tendencies, and many other elements that speak of the diversity of gender identity. There is
not just male and female, or masculine and feminine, realities associated with gender identity. One author notes that, "The nature vs. nurture debate on whether it is biology or
environment that causes human beings to choose certain roles and lifestyles is a perennial controversy in sociobiology, but since the seventies the debate has been extended to whether nurture, i.e.
culture, can override biology and be a determinant of sex itself" (Francis, 2000). It is likely that society, or social influences, will never influence the sex of an individual. The
