There are certainly more cyper-phobic women than men. It might go to the very core of gender differences as reared in a fundamentally male society, a woman is taught to "act dumb" and steered away from science. The technology inherent in the design of the computer is frankly scary to anyone. The thought that ones and zeros run our lives sometimes makes one think there is a higher power controlling the intricacies of the internet. After all, how could anything like that work to connect so many people together? But the internet does work. Originally designed by the government for its own purposes ordinary citizens have jumped on the bandwagon only to create a society that revolves around its usage. The unfortunate thing is that women have hesitated to get on board. It is as if the majority jumped and women had gotten their high heels caught on something. Many women have computers in their homes but do not know their e-mail addresses. They are afraid to use it, or claim to have no time or interest, leaving their kids to retrieve anything they need from its depths. It has been estimated that only about 10 percent of approximately twenty million internet users around the world, are women (Working Womens Magazine cited in Myers, 1996). A survey found that women who do purchase computers, most of whom are in business for themselves, want the hardware to work reliably, be easy to use and be reasonably priced (Myers, 1996).
