legality and sanctioning of gay marriage have been largely sharply critical - condemning the notion as being anything from sacrilegious to a symptom of mental illness. However, in a religious study of evangelical Christians, while there may be strong opposition to gay marriage support for a constitutional amendment banning it is only "lukewarm" at best (Study Says Evangelicals Waver on Amendment 14). A study of more than 1,600 Christians revealed that even though 85 percent stated they were against gay marriages, only 41 percent of them believed they should be banned constitutionally (Study Says Evangelicals Waver on Amendment 14). According to John Green, director of the University of Akrons Bliss Institute of Applied Politics, these findings represent the diversity that exists within Christianity, even among the most conservative evangelical sect, something the government and media overlook (Study Says Evangelicals Waver on Amendment 14). The Vatican, however, has been unrelenting in its condemnation of gay marriage, and it entered the fight with guns blazing. On July 31, 2003, a 12-page document released by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith cited it as "an immoral threat to families and harmful to the proper development of human society (Vatican, Bush Oppose Gay Marriage 14). The statement went on to pronounce heterosexual marriage as "holy, while homosexual acts go against the natural moral law" (Vatican, Bush Oppose Gay Marriage 14). Going even further, the document stated that gay couples should not be allowed to adopt children because so doing would be a violent deprivation of a child of parents the Church has deemed as holy (Vatican, Bush Oppose Gay Marriage 14).
